As Co-leader of The Campbell Bros. with brothers Alex Jr. and David, Garland has enjoyed the honor of performing twice for former President Bill Clinton during his second term of office. Other highlights include three trips overseas to perform for the U.S. Armed Services on Okinawa, Japan, and the Democratic National Convention 2000 in Los Angeles. When traveling, Garland enjoys experiencing the time-honored jazz tradition of “sitting-in” with other fine musicians at local clubs in faraway places. Speaking the international language of jazz, over the past several years, Garland has performed with bands in Paris, Toronto, Las Vegas, New Orleans, San Francisco, Atlanta Detroit, and on the islands of Maui and Jamaica. While home in the Los Angeles area Garland shares his talents on saxophone as a sideman in The Stonebridge Band (Orange County), The Connection (Los Angeles), and of course as the bassist with Jazz Avenue. Beginning in 2001 Garland has enhanced his musical schedule with performances with the 1950s hit-making vocal group The Coasters (of “Yakety Yak” and “Charlie Brown” fame) and the Shirelles. Garland has appeared as a musician in two Warner Bros. feature films (Why Do FooIs Fall in love, 1998 and Lost and Found, 1999), an ABC Television movie (Tuesdays with Morrie, 1999) and on several episodes (spanning 3 seasons) of the popular Fox Television series AIly McBeal (2000-2002). The discography of the Detroit-born musician includes the well-received “From Square One” by The Campbell Bros., (Marquis Records, 1996) and the new CD by the dynamic sextet titled “Project Z” (Marquis, 2002). As a member of Clifford Young’s quintet you can hear Garland's saxophone and flute on “Amazing Grace” (COY jazz, 1998). A two-time band scholarship recipient at the University of Michigan
(B.A.,1983), Garland recently taught an extension course titled “Jazz
Combo Workshop” and conducted the Varsity Band at a Los Angeles
community college. In an effort to broaden kids’ awareness of
instrumental music, Garland enjoys performing a presentation of classic
jazz to K-5th graders in school assemblies. Says the busy music man,
“The beautiful thing about music is that it makes people smile.”
